Can I Get Term Life Insurance Without a Medical Exam?

When signing up for life insurance coverage, many policies require you to take a medical exam to qualify. This exam may consist of taking blood and urine samples, taking your pulse and blood pressure and determining your height and weight. If you’re worried about how the results of a medical exam would impact your chances of getting approved for a policy, consider the following types of term life insurance policies with no medical exam.

Simplified Issue Life Insurance

Simplified issue life insurance policies eliminate the medical exam requirement. These plans typically only require you to answer a short series of health questions. If you don't want to take a medical exam, or if you want quick policy approval but don't have major health concerns, this may be the option for you.

Simplified issue life insurance plans can include some of the following features:

  • No medical exam
  • Quick yes or no answers to health questions
  • Easy application

Simplified issue plans typically have lower death benefits than fully underwritten plans.

Note: Issuance of the policy may depend upon answers to health questions set forth in the application. These plans may have a graded death benefit for an initial period of time.

Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance

If you have serious health issues that could prevent you from qualifying for a traditional or simplified issue life insurance policy, you may want to consider a guaranteed issue life insurance policy. Similar to a simplified issue policy, it doesn’t require a medical exam. But unlike a simplified issue policy, it doesn't include health questions, either.

Guaranteed issue life insurance policies may include some of the following features:

  • No medical exam and no health questions
  • Easy application
  • Fast approval

Death benefits are usually capped around $25,000 or less, and the policies are reserved for older adults in a certain age range (50-85, for example). These plans may have a graded death benefit for an initial period of time.
