MetLife, America’s largest life insurance company, failed the Federal Reserve’s “stress” test along with three other bank holding companies for 2012 according to Jeff Jeffrey’s article on InsuranceNewsNet.  The stress test is the 2012 Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review which applies worst case scenarios to 19 complex holding companies through the end of 2012.  Because these four companies failed the test, the Federal Reserve rejected their capital management plans.

While I was watching the Academy Awards last night, I was particularly interested in MetLife’s adorable commercial with the infamous Peanuts characters.  Could I be hearing this right?  MetLife is offering quality life insurance coverage for as low as $14 per month?  There had to be a catch.

The country’s largest life insurance company experienced a solid fourth quarter in 2011.  Bloomberg News reports that derivatives increased the insurer’s quarterly profits.  Net income was up to $1.6 billion from $82 million of the previous year.  World expansion has contributed to this significant growth as markets were opened in Asia, Europe, and South America.
